The rototom is a shell-less drum developed by Al Payson and Michael Colgrass that is able to change pitch by rotating its drumhead around a threaded metal ring.

Rototoms, in contrast to many other forms of drums, are made to have a variable, definite pitch, which enables composers to designate particular notes for them as tuned percussion instruments. They are frequently used to increase a standard drum kit's tom range as well.
