Sinatra’s earliest approach to tunes like “White Christmas” (which was only two years old in 1944) and “Silent Night” is straightforward, unsentimental and utterly convincing. It also owes nothing to Bring Crosby, who had a franchise on this kind of family fare. Sinatra’s fresh, non-pietistic take on this material is geared more toward the unattached young man in the street rather than family men. Most listeners will also fall right into the yuletide spirit upon hearing “The Voice” perform these beautiful renditions of evergreen Christmas songs.

As Bill Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band didn't play through any of these tracks before recording. Miles Davis laid down the themes before the tape rolled, and the band improvised. The end result was fragile and wondrous. Recorded during 2 sessions in 1959, "Kind Of Blue" worked on many different levels and will continue to do so for many years to come.
