About the album
When someone hears this album for the first time today, they'll probably scratch their head in wonder: what about the 13 tracks is meant to be ambient? All things considered, "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" is a free-form, multi-layered, emotive, atmospherically complex, and, most importantly, strong techno album with hints of beatz, electronica, and IDM that sounds like early Plastikman songs.
The sounds that transport British youth between Sheffield, Leeds, London, and Cornwall—the birthplace of Richard D. James, alias AFX or Aphex Twin—only turn ambient when measured by the criteria of rave and hardcore. Looking back, "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" represents a "turning point in ambient music" in addition to being the beginning of James' career (allmusic. de). "SAW 85-92" got number 92 on "NME's 100 Best Albums" list from 2003.
The masterpiece is also mentioned in the book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”. Like the original, the new edition of "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" will be released as a double LP on Apollo, a sub-label of R&S Records. The remastered repressing was made based on the original DAT tapes by Matt Colton.
