PURE GEWA Acoustic KALIMBA / Mbira / Thumb piano / PG-KL-M | 17 keys

The kalimba's origins can be traced back to Africa, where it is believed that this instrument was created twice: once, about 3000 years ago on the west coast of Africa, toward Cameroon, as a wholly wooden instrument with bamboo, rattan, or palm blades, and again, about 1300 years ago in the Zambezi River, where we can still see traces of it with metal strips.

Hugh Tracey, an ethnomusicologist, created the term "kalimba" in the 1950s to refer to the musical instrument of African origin, known as the "mbira" among the Shona ethnic group in Zimbabwe. The mbira is a musical instrument that represents Shona culture. According to the region in which it is used, this instrument is known by a variety of names, including likembe, sanza or senza in Cameroon and the Congo, mbira in Zimbabwe and Malawi, and lukeme, karimba in Uganda. The Europeans referred to it as a thumb piano or finger piano, but today we refer to all thumb pianos that are not indigenous to Africa as kalimbas. The general term used to refer to traditional African thumb pianos is still mbira.
